Imagine the backgammon club you would design if nobody told you it was impossible. A room where every match is played in front of an audience. Opponents with names, faces and reputations, who remember the last time you beat them. A season that means something, a trophy worth the fight, and the sound of real dice on a real board, wherever you happen to be.
That is the world GamesGrid is built on: not a lobby with a board in it, but a place where backgammon is played the way it deserves to be played.
Built with a crew of AI agents
GamesGrid is an independent project, built from scratch by one player and a crew of AI agents, each with a job of its own: programming, game design, artwork, voices, and the website you are reading now. I direct the work, test everything we make and keep refining it from the only perspective I trust: that of someone who loves to play.
It has given the game features that would never have existed otherwise, such as more than 500 club members who each play their own way. And it lets you play backgammon wherever and whenever you want, in your browser, on any screen.
Free, fair and nothing to buy
GamesGrid is free to play for everyone. We do not sell coins. There are no loot boxes, no energy timers and no dice that favour whoever paid last. What we want is an honest server where the better player wins, and the dice do the rest.
Who is behind it
Backgammon has played a huge role in my life. I never came close to grandmaster level, but the game gave me something better than a rating: it led me into a career in the online gaming industry, which is a debt I'm happy to repay with this project.
I learned to play in my early twenties. Back then GamesGrid was one of the most popular servers in the world, and it was by far my favourite place to play. Like many players, I was genuinely disappointed when it went offline.
A couple of years ago I came across the gamesgrid.com domain for sale. Owning the name of my old favourite site was too good to resist. Bringing it back to life was another matter. I spoke to people who had built the original server and to several other teams, but every conversation ended the same way: too complicated, too time-consuming or too expensive for what it would probably deliver. The plan died at an early stage.
Then I discovered vibe coding, and that gave me the opportunity to try to build the whole thing myself. I brought stubborn persistence, a passion for the game and twenty years of experience in online gaming; the project brought me the chance to explore what working with AI makes possible, on the one thing I had always dreamt of building.
What I am building
A Career Mode where you climb through a living world of tournaments and leagues against more than 500 virtual club members, each with a personality and a career of their own. And online play, where you sit down against real people: friendly or ranked, with the full rules, the cube and a proper match. Community and competition, backgammon as it was meant to be: played to win, with the thrill of the dice.
The game as it is today: the GamesGrid table during a 5-point match.
The new GamesGrid shares nothing with the original but the name. Everything else is new, built from scratch with one ambition: to make GamesGrid revolutionary again.
Imagine online backgammon as a living world, where you compete against over 500 unique personalities from 120 countries. Every member has their own character, life story, voice, playing strength and style. They compete in the same leagues and tournaments as you, build careers alongside yours and remember the matches, conversations and history you create together.
Learn who they are. Adapt to how they play. Earn their respect, make friends, create rivalries and become part of their story—because they will become part of yours.
