Backgammon Online, Done Right.
The backgammon community has waited long enough.
For nearly two decades, the people who actually care about this game have watched online backgammon get colonised by coin shops, energy timers, ads between rolls, and dice that don't even pretend to be uniform. Search "play backgammon online free" today and you get a wall of mobile apps that let you grind soft currency to unlock the privilege of playing the next match — and discover, eventually, that the dice favour the player who just spent five dollars.
That is not what backgammon is. That is not what backgammon online should be.
GamesGrid is back. And this is the manifesto for what we are doing instead.
The Pure Game, Restored
For a generation of players in the 1990s and 2000s, backgammon online meant something. It meant logging into a real server, finding a rated opponent in your skill bracket, and playing a serious match for a real rating. It meant tournaments. It meant leagues. It meant a community that took the game seriously.
The original GamesGrid was that server, from December 1996 until it went dark in 2010. The full thirty-year arc is on the history page.
The 2026 platform is bringing that back — and we are doing it in 2026 with twenty years of accumulated theory, modern engineering, and a deliberate rejection of every commercial pattern that has poisoned the modern app-store backgammon experience.
What We're Building
The exact mechanics are coming closer to launch. The shape is this:
- Free online backgammon as the world has never seen before. A free tier that is actually a backgammon platform — not a coin-grinding meta-game with a backgammon board stapled on as decoration.
- A brilliant new way of competition. A career structure that gives rated play a real arc. Your matches matter. Your rating means something. There is a real path from "just got here" to the top of the ladder.
- The best bots in the game's history. The legendary GG Weasel, GG Raccoon, GG Forever, GG Otter, GG Chipmunk, and MrHyperBot return — joined by a new generation of highly advanced bot opponents you have not seen anywhere else.
- Stunning gameplay. Modern engineering on the inside; a beautiful, considered presentation on the outside.
- Tools and competition formats never before seen in backgammon. We are not revealing the details yet. We are revealing the philosophy.
Prepare for your backgammon career. The launch is closer than you think.
The Anti-Greed Manifesto
We are going hard on this. There is a way to run a backgammon platform that respects its players. There is a way that doesn't. The modern app stores are full of the second kind. We are unapologetically doing the first.
On the GamesGrid platform, there will be:
- No coin mechanics. Zero. There is no in-platform currency that gates gameplay. The free tier is a backgammon platform, not a soft-currency vending machine.
- No pay-to-play wall on the competitive ladder. Rated matches do not have hidden per-match fees disguised as "premium boosts." The competitive ladder is open to free accounts.
- No pay-to-win mechanics. No buyable rating points. No paid bots that play better. No purchased "dice luck."
- No rigged dice. Every roll is generated by Mersenne Twister (MT19937), audit-logged, and statistically uniform. The dice are the same for every player, in every match, at every score. Full RNG documentation here.
- No lootboxes. No energy timers. No daily-login coercion mechanics. None of the manipulative design patterns that the mobile-app industry has spent a decade normalising.
- No advertising in match screens. Backgammon was not designed to be interrupted by ads between rolls.
This is not a feature list. It is a philosophy. It is an architectural decision about what this platform is. We have zero tolerance for the money-grabbing formulas ruining modern apps, and we are setting an entirely new standard for the game.
Competitive Integrity, Engineered In
The promise of online backgammon, at its best, is that it is competitive backgammon — rated, recorded, fair, taken seriously. We are taking that promise seriously.
- True random dice. Mersenne Twister, named algorithm, public audit trail. Every seed logged. Every roll reproducible by an independent auditor.
- Anti-cheating from day one. Cheaters, boosters, droppers, collusion, and computer-aided play during rated matches are explicitly prohibited under the community standards. The enforcement framework is published, transparent, and appealable.
- Performance Ratings (PR) and ELO, calibrated to the global standard. Your skill is measured the same way the wider competitive scene measures it. Full methodology here.
- Every match exportable for independent analysis. Bring your matches into GNU Backgammon, eXtreme Gammon, or BGBlitz for post-game review. No proprietary lock-in.
- No platform interference in match outcomes. Period.
The integrity claims are not marketing. They are the architectural foundation. GamesGrid is being built by people who play backgammon and who care about the game.
