Every member is a character
Over 500 virtual club members from 120 countries form the heart of the new GamesGrid. Each has a story, a voice, a personality and a playing style of their own. Their characters shape not only how they play, but how they chat with you—giving you someone to get to know, not just someone to beat.
Virtual players. A more human experience
Playing against a real person online does not always feel like meeting one. When your conversation is limited to emoticons and preset sentences, little of the personality across the board reaches you.
GamesGrid's virtual members give you someone to get to know. Ask about their home town. Pick up on something in their biography. Discover an interest you share, or let the conversation wander beyond backgammon. You are not choosing a phrase from a menu—and their replies are not interchangeable.
Their character shapes the conversation. Some are warm and talkative. Others are reserved, direct or more interested in the position on the board. Some enjoy your company; others would appreciate a little less conversation while they think.
At first, you might choose an opponent by their playing level or country. Later, you return because you enjoyed their conversation, want another chance after a close defeat or are curious about how their season is going. A club you get to know, rather than a list of opponents you work through.
A voice you will come to recognise
Every member has a distinctive voice matched to their character, in their own language: they greet you, double you, take, drop and resign in their own words. Across the club, you will hear more than fifty languages.
The remarks are deliberately limited to a few short lines per match. Enough to give your opponent a presence, without turning every move into a running commentary. Prefer a quiet game? You can mute them.
You will hear the difference before you see it. The dice roll differently on cork than on leather, on wool than on wood, and so do the checkers when they land. We have put a lot of work into the sound, because that is what makes a table feel like a table and not a screen.
Ready for a match. Respectful of your time
Your friends may be offline. Your usual opponent may be busy. There is still someone at the club ready to play.
And when you sit down, you get an opponent who respects the game. Members play with courtesy, do not deliberately leave the clock running when they are losing, and resign when the position calls for it.
The differences go all the way to the board
The portraits and personalities are only part of what distinguishes the members. Their play has to distinguish them too.
Each is calibrated to a target Performance Rating (PR) range, with decisions and mistakes shaped to reflect a human player at that level. A weaker member can still beat you when the dice fall their way. A stronger one gives you much less room to recover from your own mistakes. As you play them again, you begin to recognise the opponent—not just the portrait.
The calibration, playing styles and engine behind it all are explained on our Bots & AI page.
They want that trophy too
While you are planning your career, the other members are building theirs. They enter tournaments, compete in leagues, earn promotion, suffer relegation and manage their own simulated bankrolls—following the same calendar and rules as you.
Every match between members is played out by the game engine. The wins, defeats and titles you see come from those matches. A familiar name above you in the standings is not just a number to pass. It is an opponent you know.
Your next opponent could become your teammate
During your career, members may invite you to join them in 2 vs 2 doubles tournaments. Enter events together, pursue titles as a pair and build a shared record alongside your individual careers. Many members already have regular doubles partners, so finding an opportunity—and discovering who you enjoy playing alongside—is part of your career.
Look for the GG. You will always recognise our members
Every GamesGrid virtual member has GG before their surname: GG Bakker, GG Mizzi, and so on. These are fictional club members, not real people. What makes them individual is not a pretence that they are human. It is the combination of how they play, what they say, the careers they build and the history you develop against them.

Questions about the members
What happens when I beat a member?
That first victory in a career event permanently unlocks the member on your account, across every career you start. You can challenge them outside career events and visit their profile for a conversation away from the table. Your list of unlocked opponents becomes a record of players you have beaten — a club within the club. There are over 500 members to work through; beat them all, and a surprise will be waiting.
Are the members real people?
No. Every GamesGrid member has GG before their surname — GG Bakker, GG Mizzi — and that prefix tells you they are fictional club members, wherever you meet them: in a profile, across the board, in a draw or in the standings.
How strong are they?
Each member is calibrated to a target Performance Rating (PR) range, with decisions and mistakes shaped to reflect a human player at that level. It is not just how often they go wrong, but which positions they handle well and which expose their weaknesses. Difficult checker plays and cube decisions reveal more of the difference between levels.
Do the members talk during a match?
Yes. A greeting before the opening roll, a response to your double, a few words after a win or a defeat — spoken in their own voice, in their own language, across more than fifty languages. It is limited to a few short lines per match, and you can mute them.
Do the members have careers of their own?
Yes. They enter tournaments, compete in leagues, earn promotion, suffer relegation, secure sponsorship contracts and manage their own bankrolls, following the same calendar and rules as you. Every match between members is played out by the game engine, and their careers only advance as you move through your own calendar.
Can I play doubles with a member?
Yes. During your career, members may invite you into 2 vs 2 doubles tournaments. Many already have regular partners, so not every pairing is available — you might first meet across a friendly board, in a league fixture or in a casino room before entering a tournament on the same side.
