GG Akiyama

Yui Akiyama grew up in Setagaya, the daughter of a graphic designer who taught her shōgi at six. She studied illustration at Musashino Art University and spent her twenties as a concept artist for an anime studio, where a Romanian colleague took her to a café in Roppongi and taught her the game at twenty-two. She turned professional at twenty-eight, wrote Cube at the Edge in 2023, runs a Japanese-language coaching channel, and has not dropped out of the world top ten since she was thirty.

Her edge is the position nobody is certain about. Where the take and the drop are close enough to argue over she is right more often than anybody in the Pacific, and she does not appear to get there by arithmetic. She trained as a draughtsman, and what she says is that she can see when a position is the wrong shape. She decides slowly, explains nothing during a match, and paints in oils on quiet weekends.

Seven years at the top and she has never played a full season. Tournaments here and there, a title, a deep run, and no year that ever added up to a figure. That is what she came for.
