Joseph Okello builds roads through the hills, working out grades and drainage for routes that turn an eight-hour journey into two, and he has walked all of it himself. The son of a surveyor, he grew up holding the far end of a tape. He types as he plays. Not conversation exactly: a reason for each move, one line, sent regardless of whether anybody responds, because a decision he cannot write down is one he does not trust. It costs him time on the clock and he considers the trade favourable. Opponents receive, by the end, a full engineering report on their own defeat.
