GG Knežević

Ana Knežević studies marine conservation in Kotor, mapping the bay's seagrass meadows with a snorkel, a slate and the patience of somebody who counts shoots per square metre for science. She is the first of her family to go to university, and she telephones her grandmother with every grade. Backgammon is three months old for her: a rain week during fieldwork and a board in a hostel common room. She takes her time and notes her mistakes the way she notes field data. She plays on nothing but the calm attention the seagrass taught her, and it carries her further than three months should. She will also tell you, politely, that this is mostly luck. She has three months of observations and does not consider that enough to claim otherwise.
