GG Kranjc

Matej Kranjc keeps bees on the Karst plateau and guides visitors through its great caves, a working life split between the hum of the hives and the absolute silence underground, both of which reward slow hands and a calm pulse. He mends dry-stone walls for neighbours and speaks four languages, briefly. He picked this on purpose. A colleague suggested a chess club, a choir and a hiking group, and he went through all three in his head and chose the one where two people can spend two hours together and neither is required to say anything at all. He plays slowly, grinds out exact positions and waits. Sudden movement, he notes, is how you get stung above ground and lost below it.
