GG Marley

Peter Marley learned in his grandmother's yard in Trench Town, on a board left behind by a Lebanese neighbour who moved away before he was born, which is how a reggae musician came to play DMP properly. He still uses it. The inlay is worn through in two places, one hinge has been mended with wire, and he has never asked whose it was or where the family went. It would spoil it, he says, and does not elaborate. He gigs three nights a week, does studio work by day, and plays between takes with whoever fancies it. The words came with the board. He counts a gammon and calls the sixes in Arabic he does not otherwise speak, learned off his grandmother, who had them off the man who left it. He never checked whether he says it right.
