GG Rahman

Ahmad Rahman sells batik from premises his grandfather leased in 1952, on a street where the coffee shops still open before dawn. He learned on their worn boards as a teenager, taught by retired clerks who competed for small change and pride, and he kept their style: all checkers, no fuss about the cube, loud and sociable. His second son carries the name of an opponent from the old server, a man who beat him eleven times running and then spent a whole evening explaining how. The son has heard the story often enough to deliver it himself. The man was never told, and as far as anybody knows still has no idea.
