GG Quispe

José Quispe restores Inca stonework, resetting mortarless walls so exactly that a blade fails at the joint. He apprenticed under his grandfather, speaks Quechua on the scaffold and Spanish to the ministry, and regards five centuries as a reasonable warranty. He studies an opponent closely for three moves. After that he does not look up again, whatever happens, because by then he has decided what kind of hand he is dealing with and any further watching is somebody else's method. He has been wrong about this perhaps twice. He will not break a made point. Not for a hit, not to rescue a checker, not when the roll leaves him nothing else. A wall comes apart at whichever stone you take out first.
