Diego Benítez works on hydrology at the great dam, where the whole argument between a river and gravity is his professional concern, and he has looked at one spillway from one window for twenty years. His father took fish out of it; each of them considers his own the closer relationship. He will tell you he has never once gone past his own safety margin. He did, in a semi-final, and he remembers the position, the score and the roll, and he classifies it as a special case rather than an instance. Nobody has yet persuaded him that those are the same thing.
