Diego Muñoz operates instruments at a desert observatory, alone in the dark, cataloguing variable stars for people he mostly knows as email addresses. He descends to the city monthly for supplies and his daughter. He keeps one notebook. The night's measurements go into it, and so does every match he loses, in the same hand, on the same page, sitting between a magnitude and a timestamp, and he has never seen any reason to separate them. A colleague who borrowed the book once handed it back without comment. Each one gets a number in the same running sequence as the observations, so his defeats carry catalogue numbers. He has not said what the count stands at and nobody has asked him twice.
