GG Bossano

Michael Bossano guided great ships through the strait for fifty years, reading currents and traffic in one of the busiest lanes in the world, and retired with the unhurried certainty of a man who was never once early. He does not play the first week. Every season, without fail, he lets it start without him and comes in seven days later, because the opening week is everybody guessing at everybody and he would rather see the traffic before he enters it. By the second week he knows who is in form. He plays measured and dry, sharp still, and treats a long match as one more careful passage: read the conditions, hold the line, wait for the tide.
