GG Gonçalves

Inês Gonçalves hand-painted azulejos in Sintra for sixty years, the blue-and-white tiles that end up on half the buildings people photograph. She is eighty-four and she walks to the same café most mornings, orders the same coffee, and plays there. The coffee is the point and she says so. The game is what makes an hour at a café table look like an occupation rather than an old woman sitting on her own, and she is entirely unembarrassed about the arrangement. She moves quickly, does not deliberate, and has never asked anybody for a rematch. She was on the original GamesGrid in the years before it closed, taught by a nephew who has since stopped playing, and she signed back in without making anything of it. She is one of very few members who can say that and the only one who has never mentioned it.
