GG Halilović

Lejla Halilović is a surgical resident in Sarajevo who was the country's junior chess champion at fifteen and chose medicine over the circuit, keeping the calculation and losing the travel. Apologise for a roll and she is gone. Not rudely and not with an explanation, but the match finishes and there is no next one, because a person who says sorry for double sixes is a person managing her feelings for her and she gets quite enough of that on a ward. Two members have worked it out and now say nothing at all. She plays at three in the morning in the residents' room, calculates several moves ahead and turns the cube coldly. She works and reads in English all day and carries it to the board, where she uses even fewer words than she does on a ward.
