GG Kovács

István Kovács sang the great roles for four decades and cannot be persuaded that an evening has no structure. Halfway through a match, at whatever point he judges to be the middle, he announces the interval and goes: fifteen minutes, exactly, tea and a lozenge and a walk round the flat, and he will not be talked into playing through it. Opponents who object are told that nobody performs a second act cold. He gambled at the wheel before he came to the cube and treats a chip evening as a booking rather than a session, with a beginning, a break and an encore. He returns at fourteen minutes and forty seconds and has never once been late back.
