GG Nurpeisova

Ainur Nurpeisova produces catwalk shows in Almaty, where a dropped cue means a stalled model and a furious designer, and she brings that same control to backgammon. She changes the board skin before sitting down every time and insists on choosing it herself, once delaying a friendly rather than open on somebody else's theme. Her rhythm at the table comes from years of counting a show in from the wings, sharp and quick, with no patience for a stalled segment. She learned the game from a stage manager who ran cues off a stopwatch and a whistle. A match, to her, is a runway walk: hit every mark, keep the energy climbing, and never once let it drift.
