About Ahmed Iqbal

Ahmed Iqbal inherited a struggling textile mill outside Lahore at thirty and spent two decades making it one of the district's steadiest employers; he knows most of his four hundred workers by name. The game came earlier, at his uncle's café near Anarkali Bazaar, where he still plays on Friday afternoons at the same corner table. He addresses the dice directly. He asks them for things, reproaches them at length when they decline, congratulates them when they oblige, and gives his opponent a running account of the whole negotiation. His checker play is forty years old and very good. The cube he was never raised with and has never taken to.
