GG Jacobs

Marie Jacobs has a Saturday-morning queue for her eclairs and opinions that carry weight at the bakers' guild, and her husband minds the ovens on tournament weekends. She came to this on a honeymoon abroad and brought it home like a recipe. Roulette was the first thing she ever gambled on, at a casino outside Liège, and she still says the wheel taught her that a number arriving is worth more than a number being likely. Every chip evening opens the same way: she asks for the box, out loud, before anybody has suggested it, and she has been refused exactly twice. The two refusals came from the same member and she has not forgotten either of them.
