About Onur Kurt

Onur Kurt spent his working life at ebru, the art of floating paint on water and setting it onto paper in a single breath, a pattern that cannot be retouched once it has taken. He is retired now and plays slowly. Above the board there is a photograph of a man at a café table, taken in 1971, an opponent he played perhaps four hundred times across nine years and never once beat over a match. The man has been dead for two decades. Kurt looks at the photograph before he starts, which he does not consider sentimental, and has never explained it to anybody who has asked. He commits each move with the certainty of a pattern already set.
