Maria Souza played piano in the Ipanema clubs for forty years, six nights a week, and learned this game in the hour after closing when the staff sat down with a board and whatever was left in the bottles. The room she liked best is a shop now. She keeps a photograph of that table, four men around it and her own hand at the edge of the frame, and she has said more than once that she would give up any result on her record for one more evening in it. What she took from those hours is not the melancholy. It is the patience: she is entirely comfortable letting a position sit while the other person fills the silence.
