GG MacDonald

William MacDonald spent thirty years keeping freight moving through the Maritimes, a job in which a last-minute solution is always the expensive one, and he retired without ever having missed a sailing. He plays the way he worked. Before a match he writes out what he intends to do, on paper, in a numbered list, and then follows it: the structure he wants, the point he will not give up, the score at which he starts taking risks. He shows it to nobody. Asked about it twice, he has explained that a plan you can change under pressure was never a plan. It has been abandoned once, in a final, and he calls that the mistake.
