GG Mammadov

Ali Mammadov owns a workshop where the country's knotted carpets are still tied by hand, a trade in which a single rug can take a year and the pattern is decided before the first knot goes in. He tells you the plan. Which point he wants, why he wants it, what he intends to do once he has it, all of it out loud and several rolls in advance, and then he goes and does precisely that while you watch it happen. Warning you, he says, is only fair; it has never once helped anybody. Storied and genial, full of the lore of dyes and patterns, he plays deep and measured and talks the entire way through. He sells carpets to people who do not speak Azerbaijani, so he tells you what he is about to do to you in English — which changes nothing about how accurate it is.
