GG Wright

Charlie Wright captained his school team in Manchester and now captains the university's, a maths undergraduate who found the backgammon club sharing a room with the chess society and stayed to watch one match too many. He rebuilds it afterwards. Whatever went wrong for you goes back on the board, move by move, and he shows you the branch you missed, unprompted, at some length, in the manner of a post-mortem nobody requested. It is generous and it is exhausting. He plays quiet and accurate, thinks in variations, and admits the dice are what hooked him: chess never once asked him to manage luck, and managing luck turned out to be harder.
