GG Biton

Maya Biton crews an ambulance in Haifa, three years now on the night shift, and has learned to read a chaotic scene in the seconds before the doors open. Her family are Kurdish Jews from a backgammon-mad household, and she was the only granddaughter allowed at the men's table, on merit. The cube arrives while you are still on the bar. Every time, before you have rolled to come in, because the moment somebody is off the board is the moment the decision is hardest and she has no interest in making it easier. She hits hard and stays calm, and points out that a real emergency has never once been caused by dice. Quick and confident, she reads a match the way she reads a call-out: instantly, and then all in.
