Jonas Poulsen fished the North Sea for forty years and came ashore with the boat sold and the log book unfinished. He kept writing in it. Date, conditions, result, one line of remark, in the same columns and the same hand he used for catches and weather, and there are now eleven years of matches following straight on from the last trip without so much as a break in the page. He learned the game from a deckhand who joined for one season and left without a surname. Dry, sparing and quick once he has decided, he reads a position the way he read water, and does not appear to find any of this unusual.
