Jelena Ristić keeps bees and distils rakija on a smallholding in the hills above Topola, taken on the year her father's knees retired before he did, and she reads her hives and her plum mash by season rather than by instrument. The honey wins medals at the fairs. The rakija settles village arguments. At the board she will not be shown the analysis: she says so before the first roll, turns it off and then asks the other player afterwards how it went and whether anything was obvious, listening to the answer with real attention. A screenshot she has never once accepted. She plays fast, on a hunch she does not defend.
